The sky over the Outback bleeds red at dusk, a
side effect of the ion storms that crippled
global tech in 2047. Cities are ghost towns. The
only law left is the one written in blood.
A nurse named Eliza works in a makeshift clinic
under a rusted caravan, treating settlers who
trade water for medical care. She’s not supposed
to ask questions, but she sees the same scar on
three men: a jagged line across the neck,
matching the mark of a longdead outlaw.
The clinic gets a new patient—a man with no name,
only a number. He’s bleeding from a wound that
shouldn’t exist, a hole burned through his chest
by something that doesn’t follow physics. Eliza
stitches him, but he whispers, “They’re coming
for the light.”
That night, the ion storms flare again. The
clinic’s power grid fails. A group of armed
figures arrives, their faces hidden behind masks
made of recycled circuit boards. They take the
man, but not before he slips Eliza a scrap of
paper: a map of the Outback, marked with red
dots.
Eliza follows the map. She finds a settlement
built inside a derelict mining shaft, its walls
lined with solar panels and oldworld radios. The
people here live off the grid, trading goods and
secrets. They call themselves the Last Light, a
faction of bushrangers who refuse to bow to the
new world order.
She’s asked to stay, but the leader—a woman with
a scar like Eliza’s—warns her: “You don’t belong
here. You’ll die trying to understand.”
Eliza stays. She learns the truth: the ion
storms weren’t natural. They were triggered by a
secret project, a failed attempt to control the
weather. The bushrangers know the location of
the project’s core, buried deep in the desert.
If it’s reactivated, the entire Outback will
become uninhabitable.
The government sends a strike team. They use
drones and energy weapons, but the bushrangers
have adapted. They use old tech, scavenged and
repurposed. A fight breaks out in the mine.
Eliza is caught in the crossfire, but she uses
her medical skills to save a soldier, earning
temporary trust.
The leader reveals the final rule: no one leaves
the Outback alive. The government has already
killed anyone who tried to expose the project.
Eliza is given a choice—stay and fight, or be
left behind.
She chooses to fight.
In the final stand, the bushrangers lure the
strike team into a cavein. Eliza leads a charge,
using her knowledge of the terrain to cut off
escape routes. The leader sacrifices herself to
trigger a controlled explosion, collapsing the
mine and sealing the core forever.
Eliza survives. She walks out of the desert,
carrying the last data chip from the project.
The world above is still broken, but the Outback
is safe.
No one knows what happened. No one asks.
The light remains.
